I assume they did this in the hope of making progress in China. I also assume it is past the point of no return...that a new location can not be set up in time.
I would say it is way too late to change venue. Only LA or a few other places have enough capacity at any time to handle the Olympics. They have enough controversy with just the idea of the athletes trying to perform in the super polluted Beijing environment, let alone the human rights issues. Honestly they are not doing anything worse than Europe or the US did 100+ years ago. The trick is that was 100 years ago and the US and EU don't like what China is doing. China figures everyone else was able to leverage someone or someplace in order to build up to their current levels, so should they. At least that is my understanding of it.
